MK4 added a 'Maximum Damage' cap to the game's combo system, automatically breaking combos if they deal over a set amount of damage to a player and, thus, preventing infinite combos (although this cap can be removed with a code). By sidestepping, the player is able to move in a 3D manner, shifting the camera angle, preventing both characters from holding up the weapons or objects they had on the ground. The weapons can also be purposely dropped, in similar fashion to the arena objects such as severed heads and rocks if an opponent's weapon is dropped, the other character is able to pick it up and use it. This includes swinging, clubbing or even tossing the weapons. Once equipped, the weapons are primarily used through the punch buttons. MK4 introduces a limited weapon system, allowing each character to take out a special weapon using a set button combination. Mortal Kombat 4 is played in a similar way to the previous titles from the series with some changes. The other 17 playable characters take part in the battle between good and evil, with the forces of light trying to stop Shinnok and the forces of darkness from conquering all the realms. The storyline chronicles the attack from the corrupted Elder God Shinnok against his former comrades who trapped him in the Netherealm many years prior to the beginning of the series. The gameplay system of Mortal Kombat 4 is similar to that of the previous games one of the most notable additions is the use of weapons and objects during fights. Eurocom (who had previously developed the Sega Saturn version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3) later ported it to the PlayStation, Nintendo 64, PC, and Game Boy Color during 1998.Īn updated version titled Mortal Kombat Gold was released exclusively for the Dreamcast the following year. It is also the last game of the series to have an arcade release. Released to arcades in 1997, Mortal Kombat 4 is the first title from the series, and one of the first made by Midway overall, to use 3D computer graphics. Mortal Kombat 4 (MK4) is the fourth main installment in the Mortal Kombat series of fighting games developed by Midway Games. ![]() Be patient :-)Įd Boon, David Lee Michicich, Todd Allen. But I suppose being able to see fatalities for the first time in 100 percent 3D form is a sight for sore eyed MK fans who had been waiting for the transition for years. Unfortunately, winning in a brutal death match doesn't make up for the lacking character selection. The controls get a tad sticky at times, however the sweet taste of victory makes up for that. It's also the first time weapons are available to all characters. MK4 is of course the first addition to feature 3D rendered characters and enviroments. The manual provides data on special moves and fatalities for each of the in-game characters. Other modes of play include one-on-one simple clashes, two-on-two matches and three forms of endurance options. Mortal Kombat 4 supports keyboard (re-mapping is supported), game pad and joystick input and offers a tournament mode with up to four or eight character bracketing. There are now five towers to climb, each progressively more difficult than the one before. Each warrior possesses a specific weapon that can be stolen, dropped or picked up. Returning characters from previous games not only retain their special moves and combinations but can now use newly designed additional moves as well. An option to set up a team of fighters (controlled by you) to go against the CPU is also available. ![]() As in past iterations of the game, gameplay consists of selecting one of the characters and challenging either computer controlled characters or one human opponent for supremacy in the battle arena. The total number of characters now available numbers 17, including two hidden warriors. Mortal Kombat 4 contains seven new warrior-fighters and offers more than nine 3D battle arenas. The war has been rekindled but this time mortals can win it! That was then, this is now: Shinnok has managed to escape from his prison of exile and with renewed menace threatens the world once again. He was exiled to the Netherealm at the hands of the fierce warrior Raiden. The basic story remains intact, a story that began with the defeat of the Elder God Shinnok thousands of years in the past. ![]() The venerable series of Mortal Kombat games continues with Mortal Kombat 4 by Midway Games.
